Pacific Crest Trail

This section of the Chinook Trail starts at the Pacific Crest Trail just west of the Sedum Ridge Trail. The Pacific Crest Trail parallels an abandoned section of the old Sunset-Hemlock Forest Service Road. The route continues east on the Pacific Crest Trail as it winds down to Trout Creek.

There is an excellent campsite on the shore of Trout Creek just before the bridge crossing. After the bridge the trail goes through a level forest with rhododendrons beneath the tall fir trees.

There is a short road walk before passing by Bunker Hill. The trail continues down to cross the Wind River and then across the valley to Panther Creek.

Near Panther Creek are several campsites and the Panther Creek drive-in campground is nearby.

Crossing Panther Creek the trail climbs steeply up through the Douglas fir forest with glimpses of the mountains to the south through breaks in the trees.

Cross Forest Road 68 and walk through a beautiful second-growth forest and climb moderately to the Grassy Knoll Trail.

Take a short side trip to the top of Big Huckleberry Mountain for distant mountain views.
