The trail follows the Columbia River between the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center to Riverfront Park and The Dalles Bridge Junction. Six miles are completed heading east from the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center to the marina. There are some breaks in the trail after that. When completed the trail will extend 10 miles to the Dalles Dam.

At mile 6, the trail is closed from November 1st to Memorial Day to protect wildlife in Riverfront Park, through which the trail passes.
